Family Research September 23, 2009

I have taken advantage of some down time and catching up on side projects that have sat about for ever.
First up was family research.I had been dabbling with this on Genes Reunited and Scotland’s People for some years now but had never just ‘gone for it’. There are a lot of adoptions in my family tree – my grandfather, my partner, my partners mother to name but three. So last week I decided to spend two full days tracking down my children’s ancestors. Even with todays technology it isn’t quick. My partners mother supplied her birth certificate showing her birth mother as Edna Wilder. No problem. Genes Reunited found 1300! What they don’t say is that all their search really ‘does’ is include a document that if Edna Wilder was on it, it would be in this particular area/year. First click gets you a registry entry with about 500 names – none of which is Edna. Money for old rope. All they have done is scan a page ( often badly) and put it under the quarter i.e. Jan, Feb, March of any given year for a short sample of the alphabet. OK, it’s quicker than going to the records office – but not by much. How about putting the actual records into an actual database? Now that would be worth paying for.
I digress. I spent two full days line by line, page by page. Late nights, coffee, wine, coffee. Success! I tracked down my partners father and a new brother and sister. I also managed to track down my partners mother’s family – two brothers, two nieces and two nephews. OK so all we had to do was verify -that should take a while. Not so – within minutes of contacting all concerned they had responded. Many phone calls, tears and emails later the first meeting is next week.
I’ll reveal more once everyone is agreed, but I am very excited that my partners’ new uncle is a Professor of Psychology at a major London university. He should have plenty of case studies out of all these reunions;o)
I forgot about it. September 23, 2009

I’ve been so busy working on other people’s blogs that I completely forgot about my own. Now, I am not going to promise to keep this up to date – I just haven’t got the time. But I will try to get something on here on a monthly basis.

The introduction of the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 represents a substantial change in the management of health and safety. Coming into force on 6 April 2008, the new legislation will make it possible for companies and government bodies to face prosecution should gross management failure result in the death of a person – be they an employee, a member of the public or any other individual.
Under existing legislation, a company’s guilt is associated with the gross negligence of an individual considered to be the embodiment of the company. While this is straightforward with regards to small companies, it has posed a problem in prosecutions against larger employers. The new Act will effectively remedy the current situation by making it possible for an organisation’s senior management team to be held accountable.
With nearly 10 years’ experience in the field of lone worker safety and monitoring in excess of 17,000 lone workers, Argyll is the UK market leader in lone worker safety monitoring. Drawing on our experience, we would advise all organisations to evaluate their health and safety policies in light of the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act.

Weather has been awful in Dunoon all January. A lot of damage to our roof with the latest gale.
Role on spring.
Crashed my motorbike the other day. I was driving on to Western Ferries when I suddenly found myself on the deck. A substantial patch of oil was on the ground as soon at the front wheel touched it.. bang I’m lyimg in a heap. Badly bruised leg and ribs still very sore. If thats how bad it gets at 5 miles per hour I shudder to think what would happen at 60.
